Commercial cleaning is a broad term predominantly used by cleaning companies who earn an income by being contracted by individuals, businesses, or corporations to carry out cleaning jobs in a variety of premises. Cleaning companies can be found in virtually every town and city in the world, with a higher concentration in affluent regions. 27-year-old Jennie Mills, owner of Rainbow International Derbyshire, a disaster recovery and specialist cleaning service for businesses and homeowners with 61 units across the UK, has been shortlisted for Young Female Franchisee of the Year at the 2019 bfa HSBC Franchise Awards.

The event, hosted by the British Franchise Association (bfa), recognises those in franchising who have shown exceptional business acumen over the past 12 months. To get shortlisted for Young Female Franchisee of the Year, you must be under the age of 35 and have shown exceptional growth and development within your business.

Jennie, who has ran the franchise for four years, used to be a commercial scuba diver in the film industry, with no prior business experience. Since taking ownership of Rainbow International Derbyshire, she has made incremental annual turnover ranging from 145%-265% year-on-year. She even used her previous working expertise as a scuba diver assisting a blue-chip business with cleaning algae from a lake on their premises.

She is a contributor to the trail blazer group, constantly improving best practice and looking to implement an apprenticeship technician scheme, and has been recognised twice internally with the Franchisee of the Month accolade, along with a string of other awards for her team. Her staff retention is also one of the best in the network.
“I’m so happy to be shortlisted for this award. Having only ran the business for 4 years and being completely new to the industry, this nomination shows that I’m doing things right and gives me the motivation to continue growing my business and my team. To be recognised for this is a rewarding accomplishment which I am so grateful for. I’d like to wish all the other nominees the best of luck for the awards night”.

Pip Wilkins, CEO of the bfa, stated: “Jennie has enabled her business to thrive in the East Midlands. Being part of the trail blazer group for the betterment of the brand and twice recently winning Franchisee of the Month, Jennie is an integral franchisee who pioneers improvement within the network.”

Andrew Brattesani, Head of Franchising at HSBC, stated: “Year-on-year Jennie has continued to increase her turnover after taking over the resale of the territory. Although not from a business background, Jennie has done tremendously well in growing her business.”

Jennie will go head-to-head against two other shortlisted young female franchisees – one from a company working in domiciliary care, the other a creative arts classes company for children.
